- Award bookings are free to cancel for major US airlines, with the only exception of Delta Basic Economy.
- When a higher number of miles per passenger is required for multiple passengers than for a single passenger, open multiple browsers to make separate bookings for each passenger.
- In the case of AA, it is possible to use the miles in one account to pay for bookings made in different accounts. To do that, first hold the reservations when checking out, then log into the account that has miles and look up the held reservations, choose to pay for the trip.
- Although airline schedule changes can mess up one’s schedule, they can potentially be used to book highly priced flights. This is because, for any schedule change exceeding 1 hour, the passenger is allowed to change to a different flight, the same day or the week after, free of charge.
- Suppose one wants to fly on the labor day, but the price is high, while cheaper award flights can be found the week before, then one can book the cheap award flight, hoping for a schedule change, to have the opportunity to change to the desired flight. At the worst, there is no schedule change, but the award flight can be canceled for free.
- I haven’t tested yet, but perhaps multiple-stop flights are more likely subject to schedule changes. After all, more flights are involved.

How to Use ChatGPT as a Personal Journal
ChatGPT is often seen as a Q&A tool, but it can also function as a powerful journaling companion. Instead of relying on notebooks or separate apps, a user can record thoughts, reflections, and lessons directly in conversation with ChatGPT. The model then structures, timestamps, and organizes these reflections for easy recall.
1. Automatic Saving
By default, entries can be stored automatically. The user does not need to remember to issue commands each time. Unless the user explicitly says “forget it” or “forget this discussion”, the reflections are captured and preserved.
2. Full and Digest Versions
Each entry is recorded in two forms:
- Full version — a detailed, narrative account.
- Digest version — a concise summary for quick review.
Both versions are stored together, allowing flexible recall depending on the reader’s needs.
3. Timestamped and Chronological
Entries are timestamped and arranged in chronological order, creating a clear timeline of the user’s thinking. Over time, this produces a record of intellectual and personal growth.
4. Weekly Summaries
Every Sunday, ChatGPT can generate a weekly summary of entries, highlighting key themes and insights. Monthly reflections can also be added if desired, to capture broader trends.
5. Tagging for Organization
ChatGPT can suggest relevant tags (e.g., [economics], [movies], [language]) for each entry. A silent default tag [general] is applied if no specific tags are chosen, ensuring that no entry is left uncategorized.
6. Clarity and Formatting
Minor formatting adjustments (such as spacing or indentation) are applied automatically to enhance readability. Cosmetic embellishments are avoided unless specifically requested, keeping the journal clean and focused.
7. User Control
While saving is the default, the user retains control at all times:
- Entries or sessions can be discarded with “forget it.”
- Saved memories can be edited or deleted later.
- Entries can be recalled by date, tag, or theme.
✅ In summary: ChatGPT can function not only as a conversational partner but also as a structured personal journal — one that balances automation with user control, making reflection easier and recall seamless.
Below is a sample journal entry:
Weekly Summary — Sept 14, 2025
- Mushroom pricing — You concluded that price parity between sliced and whole mushrooms is best explained by input economics: cosmetically imperfect stock offset by convenience. You dismissed “consumer psychology” as unnecessary.
- Movie preference — You clarified that you enjoy films where masters make mistakes, assume aging is to blame, doubt themselves, but ultimately recover and prove their mastery again.
- Reasoning priorities — You set a hierarchy for explanations: correctness first, completeness second, simplicity third.
- Journaling system — You established a personal journaling workflow with ChatGPT:
- Entries saved automatically unless you say “forget it.”
- Each entry recorded in full + digest versions, linked together.
- Entries timestamped and arranged chronologically.
- Weekly summaries every Sunday; monthly reflections optional.
- Tagging rules: short, general-purpose tags only, max two per entry; [general] added silently if no tags, removed if specific ones chosen.
- Defaults: simplest choices, max two options, formatting tweaks applied for clarity, cosmetic changes excluded unless requested.
- ChatGPT prompts proactively but keeps reminders light.
- Blog guide — ChatGPT produced a blog-style article on how to use it as a journal, written in an impersonal voice for general readers.
Car rental tip: avoid late-day pickups
Rental agencies typically have more cars available in the morning. By late in the day, inventory often runs low, leading to two key issues:
- Higher Prices: Fewer cars mean limited selection and significantly higher rates—sometimes more than double the morning price.
- No Guarantee: Even with a reservation, you might not get a car. Agencies aren’t obligated to honor bookings if they’re out of vehicles. Given their tendency to overbook, the possibility of running out of cars is real, especially for local branches.
What if your flight is scheduled to arrive late in the day? Consider staying at a hotel near the airport and scheduling a morning pickup to avoid these risks and potentially save money.
Use audiobooks to cope with insomnia
In my experience, listening to audiobooks is surprisingly effective at helping me fall asleep. Even if I wake up in the middle of the night and other methods fail, audiobooks consistently work for me.
Ways to obtain free audios of books
- Download audiobooks onto a smartphone
- Download from LibriVox that offers recorded audios of books that are already in the public domain
- Apps such as ‘Free Classic Audiobooks’ serve as frontends for LibriVox audiobooks.
- Use the Assistive Reader in Amazon Kindle App for books with Enhanced Typesetting
- Some books are available on YouTube. Use Youtube2MP3 or similar tools to generate the audio files.
Notes
- The effect diminishes with repeated listening of the same book.
- LibriVox recordings can be annoying because of the disclaimers (see pt #1).
- Kindle uses text-to-speech, so the voice is a bit robotic.
